The term gesetzlich geschützt, abbreviated gesetzl. gesch., ges. geschützt or ges. gesch., stands for "protected by law" and indicates that the design, appearance, application or use of the item in question has been officially registered. In some cases, the even shorter version geschützt ("protected") was used.
